CONCLUSION
Conclusion
To wrap up, our project has found that there is no guarantee correlation between language and the construction of identity from the interviews conducted with the Nepalese and the Indian interviewees. Both Chris, the Nepalese restaurant owner, and Nandan, the Indian third culture kid are non-Cantonese speakers, but they still regard Hong Kong as their home and at the same time, identify themselves as HongKonger.
We can see that besides language, there are other contributing factors having great influential effect on one’s identity construction and thus when one wants to maintain or rebuild the identity of an ethnic group ( For example : Dhiraj Gurung initiated the Gurkhas in Hong Kong Project and would like to construct a more positive and stronger Nepalese identity within the younger generation of Nepali people), it is insufficient to only advocate the language of that ethnic group and overlook other contributing factors such as social contacts and education which as well would affect one’s identity construction.
Limitation and Suggestion
For our project, we have only had three interviews with 2 Nepalese and 1 Indian asking for their opinions on identity and whether they feel that Hong Kong is their Home. The sample size gathered is not representative enough to conclude that our interviewees’ opinions are able to reflect very accurately the phenomenon as well as the cause and effect of language and identity construction. It is therefore suggested that a greater sample size should be taken into account in the hope of guaranteeing accuracy and credibility.
Also, it is better to conduct interviews with people from a more diverse background so that the result obtained can be more comprehensive and not only focus on for example, Nepalese students or Indian business owners if the topic of the project is not focusing and specifying on only a particular group of target.
Lastly, as we have encountered problems during our very first interview, it is strongly advised that we should inform the interviewees in a advance about the interview instead of approaching them bluntly even though you know that they will be there. It is even better if you can conduct interview with someone that you have relation with even it is indirect ( friends’ friends etc.), as they will be more willing to expose themselves and tell you their feelings because they will feel more secure and comfortable to do so.
